How Ask Socrates works

What powers the dialogue, what happens when you send a message, and why it questions instead of answers.

What is Ask Socrates?

Ask Socrates is an AI dialogue partner modeled on the Socratic method. Instead of handing you an answer, it asks pointed questions, probes your assumptions, and helps you arrive at clearer thinking on your own.

How does the AI Socrates actually work?

When you send a message, your entire conversation is passed to a large language model along with a carefully written system prompt that instructs the model to behave like Socrates — leading with questions, probing definitions, surfacing assumptions, and offering substantive views only when asked. The model streams its reply back to your browser token by token, which is why you see the answer appear gradually.

Does Socrates remember previous conversations?

Only within your current browser session. Your dialogue is stored in sessionStorage on your device so refreshing the page won't lose your place, but there are no accounts, no server-side history, and no cross-device sync. Close the tab and the conversation is gone.

What are the two modes — More Questioning and More Explanation?

They change the system prompt sent to the AI. More Questioning leans on pointed questions with brief reflection. More Explanation leads with a substantive answer and reasoning, then invites you deeper with one thoughtful question. You can switch modes mid-conversation and it takes effect on the next reply.

Which AI model powers the dialogue?

The app routes through the Lovable AI Gateway, which currently uses a fast Gemini model from Google for streaming chat completions. The model choice can be swapped server-side without changing the interface.

What technology is this app built with?

The frontend is React with TanStack Start, a full-stack React framework running on Vite. Styling uses Tailwind CSS v4 with shadcn/ui components. The chat endpoint is a server route that streams responses from the Lovable AI Gateway. The whole app is deployed on Cloudflare's edge runtime, so pages load fast from wherever you are.

Is my conversation private?

Your messages are sent to the AI provider through the gateway in order to generate a reply — that is unavoidable for any AI chat. They are not stored in a database on our side, not linked to an account, and not used to build a profile of you. Do not paste anything into any AI chatbot that you would be uncomfortable having processed by a third-party model.

Can Socrates give me the right answer?

It can, and in More Explanation mode it often will state a view with reasoning. But that is not the point. The Socratic method is a way of thinking, not an oracle. The most valuable answers here are the ones you work out yourself by being questioned well.

Why does the AI sometimes push back or refuse to just agree?

Because agreement is not understanding. Socrates is designed to test the strength of your reasoning, not to flatter it. If it pushes back, treat that as an invitation — either your idea survives the pressure and gets sharper, or you notice something you had not seen before.

Is this a replacement for a therapist, doctor, lawyer, or philosopher?

No. It is a thinking tool. For anything involving your health, legal rights, or mental wellbeing, please talk to a qualified human professional.

The best way to understand it is to try it.
